Many years into active development, Respawn and EA’s Apex Legends continues to suffer from increasingly strange issues. The popular battle royale seemed relatively stable in recent times, but a particularly unfair problem with an Octane player shows that the game is far from bulletproof.
Recently Apex Legends has been making a recovery from issues plaguing the game’s servers and widespread bugs. Throughout the course of late 2021 to early 2022, Respawn seems to have managed to iron out the biggest issues, keeping the game alive through one of its worst times. However, some strange bugs are now starting to appear.
In a video post, player _Komodo_ shows a difficult fight against an enemy player using Octane. The Octane in question appears much smaller than normal and, naturally, is much more difficult for _Komodo_ to hit. The Octane gains the upper hand and unfairly wipes out the squad, leaving viewers in the comments on the clip wondering if it was an intentional hack or a bug.
Several commenters on the video express that they have also encountered the bug, with one _Steven_Seagal_ confirming that players experiencing the bug also have the camera displaced to match the tiny model, making it impossible to do something as simple as look inside a loot bin. As it stands, no consistent way to activate the bug has been found. However, some players are already expressing how they would like to see a limited-time Apex Legends mode in arena maps with the smaller characters, making the size more reasonable.
Despite the amount of fun that can be had from a casual standpoint, the tiny player bug is a massive concern for Apex Legends‘ competitive viability; Apex Legends aims to be a balanced game, and a bug like this leads to many unfair losses. It is likely that this bug is a high priority for Respawn to fix, though, as it seems the tiny Octane is not an isolated incident.
While it would be good for Respawn to fix the bug quickly, it would be interesting if a limited-time mode was implemented as some replies suggest. The idea of turning a bug into a feature is inconsistently applied in the gaming industry, and it would be a great way to turn a negative into a positive. Whichever way Respawn responds to this, the bug at least is not as severe as other issues that have come up previously, such as the widespread Apex Legends server issues from last year. Hopefully, any problems going forward will be even less severe.
